83 // Deal With Your Shadows: The Films of Denis Villeneuve Part One (You’ve Never Seen a Miracle: The Journey to 2049 Part Four)

For many fans in the English-speaking world, Blade Runner 2049 was their first exposure to the work of Denis Villeneuve. But for those lucky enough to have discovered his oeuvre earlier—whether through his searing Canadian work or his Hollywood breakthrough in the early 2010s—Blade Runner 2049 was confirmation of what they likely already knew: Denis Villeneuve is a talent of the very highest caliber.

In this next entry of our extended exploration into Blade Runner 2049, Dan, Jaime, and Patrick discuss Denis’ unique filmmaking gifts through the lens of his previous films, laying the groundwork for our next conversation on how those gifts helped make Blade Runner 2049 the miracle we know it to be today.

Blade Runner (1982) is singular in that it's a film that never asked for a sequel, nor, arguably, did it need one. In 2017, despite a lack of demand, the world, and fandom was given a sequel. In this second entry in our new series, covering Blade Runner: 2049, Dan, Patrick, and Jaime discuss whether or not Blade Runner needed a sequel, and where fandom was before the news of 2049.

The conversation took a few turns we weren't necessarily expecting, and Rutger Hauer even chimes in on what he said was his favorite scene in the 1982 classic.

At the very end of 2019, we lost yet another Blade Runner great: visual futurist, designer, and artist Syd Mead. In this episode, Jaime, Patrick, and Dan pay tribute to the man who was integral to much of the concept design and visual feel of Blade Runner, Aliens, Tron, and Blade Runner 2049 among many other films. Our thoughts go out to the family and friends of Mr. Mead, and we offer this episode as a final thank you to a man who has taken us by the hand for most of our lives and turned our collective dreams of the future into a tangible reality that will live on forever.
